Numurkah Secondary College (pop. 380) is a Year 7-12
co-educational College situated approximately 30 km north of
Shepparton in the midst of a diverse irrigation farming area. The
school draws its students from the town of Numurkah (pop. 4,600) and
the surrounding district bounded by the Murray River in the north,
Waaia in the west, Wunghnu and Invergordon to the south and
Katamatite in the east. Approximately two-thirds of the students
travel to the College by bus from these neighboring towns and
farming areas.
The essence of the College's philosophy is to provide
a caring co-operative environment where each student has the
opportunity and encouragement to reach his or her full potential.
Our College resources, including a highly experienced and dedicated
staff, (teaching staff of 30 and a total workforce of 45) are
directed towards promoting quality teaching and learning within a
pleasant environment. Parents and other community members are
involved in a voluntary capacity at the College. The College Council
has decided that the wearing of the College uniform is
compulsory.
The College was built in 1957 and is a mixture of
brick and light timber construction. A nine room technical wing of
brick veneer was built in 1973 to provide specialist facilities. A
new Science wing was completed in 2003. The Gymnasium and Art wing
were completed in September 2005. Our facilities include a
Resource Centre which forms the centre of a school wide computer
network.
The curriculum is organised according to the eight
learning areas and all course development is in line with the
Victorian Educational Learning Standards (VELS). Students in Year 7 study a
broad range of subjects within each learning area. Years 8, 9 and 10
are grouped together as the Vertical Program and students can design
their own course of study within guidelines to ensure a balanced
program. A comprehensive range of VCE studies provides real pathways
to post secondary opportunities.
Opportunities exist for students to undertake a
leadership role at the College. Students are elected to the
following positions: School Captains and Vice Captains, Senior and
Junior House Captains, Senior and Junior SRC Executive and SRC
Representative members and Home Group Leaders. In addition, students
may elect to become involved with the College Council,
Curriculum, Cafeteria and Uniform committees and Special Projects.
The school program in 2009 will
feature:
- A broad range of VCE and VCAL subjects with students being
offered a study skill day, the "E" team concept, vocational
education, outdoor education and work experience.
- A House system incorporating Home groups, which allows for
peer support, student leadership and a variety of student
organised activities.
- An Inter-House and Inter-School Sports program which
encourages the participation of all students.
- A Year 7 orientation camp, a Year 8 camp to Anglesea and a Central Australia trip for Years 9 and 10.
- Modern networked computer facilities and a Resource Centre.
- Technology Studies in fully equipped workshops and networked
Design Centre. Units include Go-Karts and basic electronics.
- Extensive work experience opportunities and a comprehensive
Careers Reference area with a full-time advisor.
- Strong links with local industry and opportunities for new
apprenticeships.
- Learning Areas provide a variety of opportunities for students
to enter State and National Competitions and individual
challenges.
